Role description:

Working Relationships & Contacts- Operational Department Leaders - liaise to define and negotiate support for the programme implementation with a focus around embedding changes into business as usual.


  • GEC Team Leaders - coordinating wider workload.
  • Delivery Suppliers - negotiate technical aspects of contracts and performance manage to ensure effective delivery of the programme.
  • Client Senior Stakeholders - agree project objectives, communicate project status and facilitate resolution of project issues and risks.
  • In a project management role, main contacts will be technical staff working on allocated projects and Clients.  Technical staff will be managed to ensure delivery to time and cost and Client expectations will be managed

Job Purpose:


  • Provide Technical leadership for substation main plant designs within the multi-dicipline engineering team in the Electrical Transmission and Distribution market with key clients being Transmission Owners, Distribution Network Operators, Onshore and Offshore Windfarms and large industrial clients 
  • Being a senior technical authority on Main Plant engineering within the wider company
  • Be a lead technical role on Main Plant design project deliverables, ranging from 11kV up to 400kV (with a particular emphasis on 132kV voltages and above), including undertaking the role of Lead Engineer on project teams, as required and when appropriate.
  • Produce detailed substation Main Plant design packages, compliant to required client and national technical standards.
  • Prepare calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation.
  • Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
  • Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
  • Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of substation and electrical system design.
  • Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on Main Plant related designs and deliverables.
  • Work closely with other sections within the T&D Engineering Team, to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function in the UK business.
  • Operate partly outside the project environment to support professional leadership in their discipline at a management level, establishing and consolidating relationships with clients, managing the team, managing the technical delivery of projects or specialised components of projects, supporting the development of Arcadis capability in the discipline and building and maintaining a professional reputation as an individual and for Arcadis.
  • Undertake a Project Management Role in line with Arcadis Project Management Academy competence requirements as required.
  • Take a leadership role with the project team, providing  direction and leading by example where appropriate
  • Manage the delivery of projects in accordance with Management Systems to meet time, quality, budgetary and health and safety targets.
  • Manage all aspects of the client relationship so that delivery meets or exceeds client expectations.
  • Working to ensure maximum client satisfaction, championing client care and proactively working with the client.
  • Promote both the regional and global culture of the business

Role accountabilities:


  • Encourage SHE feedback and take a lead in solving SHE issues.
  • Build strong working relationships with other teams and technical disciplines, Arcadis offices and external organisations to foster cooperation and to identify cross-sell and trade-up opportunities.
  • Engage with and champions the involvement and inclusion of Arcadis Global resources ensuring that local staff understand the benefits of their utilisation as team resources.
  • Support technical direction at a subject level.
  • Manage discipline department staff.
  • Lead the delivery of projects ensuring client satisfaction, effective project management and good communication and collaboration between Arcadis colleagues.
  • Select, lead and develop the project team, to ensure they have the necessary skills to deliver the project, they understand and are engaged with the project strategy, brief and client requirements, and to manage their delivery of project objectives.
  • Coordinate and manage project teams and large size projects of single (own) discipline engineers or mid - large size multi disciplinary project teams, ensuring client satisfaction, effective project management and good communication and collaboration between Arcadis colleagues.
  • Coach and mentor engineering professionals to support the development of Arcadis’ talent pool.
  • Manage the commercial aspects of the project (contract, invoicing, debt, client management).
  • Ensure that effective financial and project management controls are in place and deployed to enable monitoring, modification and forecasting as appropriate.
  • Drive project performance, service delivery and technical and commercial outcomes and undertake reviews, ensuring client delivery is above expectation.
  • Communicate with project team members to ensure that they understand, and become engaged with, the project strategy, brief and client requirements.
  • Manage the acquisition, deployment and management of resources for the project to ensure optimal resource allocation for the project.
  • Responsible for the selection and management of suppliers, sub-consultants and contractors associated with projects.
  • Provide specialised technical input to major/complex studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise
  • Develop and  propose potential solutions, including solutions that fall outside the standard codes where appropriate, to meet or exceed client expectations. Guide clients through the technical decision making process and provide alternative solutions if there are changes to project parameters.
  • Resolves differences of opinion between designers and checkers.
  • Lead interdisciplinary reviews of project deliverables.
  • Perform independent technical review for projects of moderate complexity.
  • Build strong working relationships with other teams and technical disciplines, Arcadis offices and external organisations to foster cooperation and to identify cross-sell and trade-up opportunities.
  • Engage with the client and all key stakeholders to develop a shared understanding of project objectives and to establish protocols for working together.
  • Manage technical client relationships and plays a major role in pursuits.
  • Lead technical business development work.
  • Provide input into specific technical aspects of individual bids to support the production of high quality winning bids.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the industry sector and with technical and legislative developments and seek out opportunities to develop a strong professional profile at a National level (e.g. conference presentations, publications and participation in technical committees).
  • Maintain records of Continuing Professional Development and are able to make these available for audit by their professional institution.

Knowledge & Experience: 


  • Minimum of 15 years of Main Plant system design experience in the electricity transmission & distribution sector, with at least 7 of those years being on UK transmission system related projects.
  • Knowledge of engineering design management best practices with ability to implement this knowledge
  • Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry.
  • Thorough understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations.
  • Experience of working in a lead substation design role on SPEN and SSEN projects in the UK.
  • Good working knowledge of SPEN and SSEN policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying SPEN, SSEN, National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to substation design in the UK.
  • IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of applying CAD technology/software to substation design 
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Strong persuasion and negotiation skills with clients and employees.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders across clients, industry, government and public.
  • Able to manage tasks on multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.
  • Able to work autonomously and/or as part of a project team.
  • Pro-active in building knowledge and understanding of the electricity transmission and distribution industry.
  • Capability to coach, develop and record CPD and encourage others in the team to do so

Dimensions of the Job: 


  • Provide technical leadership of a team of specialist electrical system Main Plant engineers in transmission and distribution substations from 11kV through to 400kV in the UK and as required when supporting international Arcadis projects.
  • Coordinate and manage the delivery of protection and control designs in line with Client expectations
  • Responsible for technical delivery of staff assignments to clients and large size projects or elements of major projects in the Main Plant discipline with fee levels generated in range of £500k-£1M

Qualifications & Experience:


  • BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in Electrical Engineering.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer professional status, or equivalent.
  • Relevant experience including leadership of the development and implementation of engineering solutions.
  • Working in a project management role and / or have project management experience
